West Indian Day Parade Celebrates Caribbean Culture in Brooklyn
The annual West Indian Day Parade, now in its 56th year, will once again transform Eastern Parkway into a moving festival on Monday, Sept. 1. This year's event, themed "Vive le Carnival," promises a day filled with music, food, and vibrant costumes as the parade celebrates Caribbean culture.
Curtis Nelson, the executive director of Sesame Flyers International and a long-time participant in the parade, expresses his excitement and inability to find words to describe the experience. For Nelson, Labor Day Monday is a significant day due to the music, excitement, and freedom expressed during the parade.
The parade will head west along Eastern Parkway from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza, with stunningly decorated floats carrying carnival bands leading the way. The colorfully and sensually costumed masqueraders will add to the festive atmosphere, creating a visual spectacle that is a highlight of the event.
The West Indian Day Parade kicks off NY Carnival Week, a multiday celebration that includes several ticketed events at the Brooklyn Museum. The nearly sold-out Soca Fest Music Festival on Friday will feature performances by KES the Band, Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons & The Vikings Band, Mical Teja, Raymond & Dil E Nadan, and surprise guest performers.
J'Ouvert, the early-morning celebration, takes place from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. ahead of the big parade. The Ultimate Fete, a rum and music celebration, is part of NY Carnival Week and takes place on Sunday. Junior Carnival, a day of family-friendly live performances, youth activities, and a back-to-school giveaway, is also part of the week's events and takes place on Saturday.
