Fire on A61 Motorway Towards Koblenz Contained by Truck Driver

A fire involving a truck on the A61 motorway towards Koblenz was successfully contained by the truck driver before the arrival of the emergency services, according to the Fire Department Bergheim.

The incident occurred between the Bergheim and Bergheim-South junctions at around 9:00 PM on Thursday. The truck was found approximately 500 meters past the Bergheim-South exit.

Brandamtmann Ulrich Braun led the operation, with approximately 30 personnel from the Bergheim, Glesch/Paffendorf units, and the full-time station deployed. The truck driver had already contained the fire at the rear axle of his trailer using a powder extinguisher.

Despite the initial containment, emergency services detected temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius and used a hose reel to cool the overheated brake of the truck. One of the two lanes was closed for the duration of the extinguishing operations.

The truck was escorted by the police to a parking lot at the Kerpen motorway interchange. The operation ended around 10:00 PM.

The Fire Department cannot provide information on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. They also emphasised that no one was injured during the incident.
