German Greens Introduce Bill for Long-Term Residency for Yazidis

Eleven years ago, on this very day, the Islamic State began a genocide campaign against the Yazidis in Sinjar, northern Iraq. Thousands of innocent lives were lost, and thousands of Yazidi women and children were raped, abducted, and enslaved. The pain, grief, and shock of these atrocities still run deep to this day.

In response to these tragic events, the Green parliamentary group in the German Bundestag has taken a significant step. They are introducing a bill to offer long-term residency to Yazidis affected by the genocide. Katharina DrΓΆge, the parliamentary group chair, and Max Lucks, the spokesperson for human rights policy, have declared their support for the initiative.

The "Yazidi Resettlement Act" (Yazidisches Ansiedlungsgesetz), as the law is called, aims to prevent Yazidis from being threatened with deportation to their tormentors' land. The bill's purpose is to ensure Yazidis can live in peace, freedom, and dignity in Germany.

The Green parliamentary group considers such actions as deporting asylum-seeking families to be inhumane. They also believe that ignoring urgent court decisions in deportation cases is unacceptable and impairs the rule of law. The group is committed to ensuring a safe haven and a new home for Yazidis in Germany.

In 2023, the German Bundestag recognised these crimes as genocide. The Green parliamentary group considers deporting Yazidis to be a dangerous symbolic politics at the expense of the most vulnerable. They expect the federal government to acknowledge Germany's special responsibility towards Yazidis.

Germany hosts the world's largest Yazidi diaspora. The Green parliamentary group's bill is a significant step towards providing a long-term option for permanent residence in Germany for Yazidis affected by genocide. This bill aims to prevent Yazidis from being threatened with deportation to their tormentors' land and ensure they can live in peace, freedom, and dignity in Germany.
