Remodeled Family Home Offers Age-Appropriate Retirement Space for Clifton Leung's Mother

Clifton Leung, the founder of Clifton Leung Design Workshop, has remodeled his family home in Stanley, Hong Kong, into an age-appropriate retirement space for his 84-year-old mother, Mabel. The tall, skinny townhouse underwent significant changes, transforming it into a spacious eight-level dwelling with three bedrooms and four bathrooms.

The remodeled family home was designed with Mabel's current and future needs in mind, as well as accommodating visiting children and grandchildren. Clifton Leung lived in the family home for seven years before his marriage in 2008, but his older sisters now reside in Canada.

During the remodeling process, the ageing infrastructure was rectified. Dodgy wiring was replaced, and leaky windows were fixed to ensure the safety and comfort of Mabel. More windows that open were installed to allow for natural ventilation, and solid walls that once made the floor plan feel disconnected were either eliminated or replaced with textured glass in a mixture of sliding and fixed panels.

To ease everyday chores, a light well in the remodeled family home was converted into a laundry chute running from top to bottom. Automated smart lighting was installed, eliminating the need for numerous exposed light switches.

Clifton Leung's father, Chung, was an automotive pioneer, founding one of the first companies in Hong Kong specializing in European car parts. He passed away last year. Mabel, a creative woman with many pursuits, including Chinese painting, calligraphy, and sewing, will now enjoy her retirement in a home tailored to her needs.

The remodeled family home offers a perfect blend of modern comfort and traditional charm, making it an ideal space for Mabel to continue her creative pursuits and spend quality time with her family.
