The conflict in Sudan, particularly in the region of Darfur, continues to take a devastating toll on the civilian population. Tens of thousands have been killed, and millions more displaced since the power struggle between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia began in April 2023.

The RSF militia, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, former deputy to military ruler Fattah al-Burhan who heads the army, has been making significant gains. They control areas in the south of Sudan and, if they take control of El-Facher, the RSF-besieged capital of North Darfur, they will control all the regional capitals in Darfur.

The city of El-Facher is currently threatened by famine due to the lack of UN aid supplies for months. Residents are reportedly eating animal feed, which is also running out. The city has also been the site of increased attacks, with hospitals and mosques coming under fire.

A source at El-Facher hospital blamed the latest attack on the RSF militia. At least 19 people were killed and dozens more injured in the air strike on Saturday. Initial information suggests that dozens of civilians and medical personnel were also killed in the drone strike. 22 of the injured admitted to the clinic were said to be in critical condition.

The attack occurred at the Yashfeen Clinic in Nyala, the RSF militia-controlled capital of South Darfur. Similar attacks have been reported in other parts of Darfur, with at least seven people killed and 71 injured in the bombing of El-Facher, the RSF-besieged capital of North Darfur, on the same day.

The United Nations has declared the fighting in Sudan as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Medical facilities in Sudan are regularly attacked, with around 80% having had to close as a result. This has led to a dire situation, with many civilians lacking access to basic healthcare services.

In Nyala, the RSF militia installed a parallel government in July, with Mohamed Hassan al-Ta'ayshi sworn in as prime minister. This move further complicates the already complex situation in Sudan, as the country grapples with the ongoing power struggle and humanitarian crisis.

The international community is urged to intervene and help bring an end to the violence in Sudan, ensuring the safety and well-being of its people.
