A significant number of iPhone users, around 30%, are predicted to abandon the iPhone 17 model in favor of a foldable phone, a development that doesn't come as a shock to me
Apple is gearing up for its annual event on September 9th, where it is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series. According to SellCell's latest survey, the new lineup is anticipated to be the best iPhone for photography, and 68.3% of iPhone owners plan to upgrade to the iPhone 17 at launch.
Battery life is the top driver for iPhone upgrades, with 53.2% of respondents citing it as a primary reason for an upgrade. However, AI features are not a significant factor, with only 7.1% considering them as a reason for an upgrade.
Interestingly, the demand for a foldable iPhone and accessories like an iRing has been mentioned, but Apple has yet to announce any such products. The survey also reveals that satisfaction with current devices is high, with 71.7% of users being satisfied.
Price remains the biggest barrier to iPhone upgrades for 68.9% of respondents. Interestingly, 47.5% would accept less battery life for a thinner device.
The survey also delves into the upgrade decision process, exploring topics including the rise in popularity of foldable smartphones and AI features. However, Samsung's Galaxy AI and Google Gemini are currently dominating the AI space, according to the survey.
Within the iPhone 17 series, 38.1% plan to choose a Pro or Pro Max, 16.7% the standard model, and 13.5% the ultra-thin Air, which is rumoured to be the thinnest iPhone ever.
The survey also reveals that almost half of iPhone users (49%) state that nothing about Android appeals to them, yet the majority also admit that Android is becoming more attractive. Over a quarter (27.1%) of iPhone owners feel that Apple has "lost its edge" versus rivals, according to SellCell's survey.
It's important to note that the most recent survey on iPhone user satisfaction comparing Apple with its competitors was conducted by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) in the USA. Tariffs could also impact iPhone purchases, with 36.8% of respondents stating they would hold off on buying if prices rise, and 29.2% saying it would depend on the increase.
In conclusion, the iPhone 17 series is eagerly anticipated by many iPhone users, with battery life and photography being the key features driving upgrades. However, price remains a significant concern, and the competition from Android devices continues to pose a challenge for Apple.
