Fürth Mourns the Loss of Human Rights Activist and Journalist Ruth Weiss

Ruth Weiss, a renowned journalist and human rights activist, has passed away at the age of 101. Born in the Franconian city of Fürth on July 26, 1924, Weiss experienced persecution and oppression as a Jewish family under the Nazi regime, leading her family to flee to South Africa in 1936.

Throughout her life, Weiss dedicated herself to fighting against hatred and oppression, advocating for justice, peace, and freedom. Her commitment against racism and discrimination, as well as her journalistic reporting on the independence movements of southern Africa, earned her numerous awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit.

Weiss's life's work is deeply appreciated by the city of Fürth, which remembers her with great respect and admiration. Mayor Thomas Jung (SPD) of Fürth praised Weiss as one of the most significant women and personalities in Fürth's history.

In South Africa, Weiss fought against apartheid, a cause that continued to be close to her heart even after her return to her birthplace in the 1970s. She lived in Cologne and Denmark before her passing.

In 2023, Weiss spoke at the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day, sharing her experiences in South Africa. She stated, "I learned that racism, anti-Semitism, and hostility to humanity know no borders, that this is an injustice that must be fought everywhere."

As a journalist, Weiss worked for various international newspapers and wrote numerous books. Her legacy continues to live on, inspiring future generations to stand up against injustice and fight for a more equal and peaceful world.

The city of Fürth, where Weiss was born and raised, will remember her as a beacon of hope and resilience, a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
