Actor Adam Scott from Severance appears less than impressive in first sneak peek of horror film directed by Oddity's helmsman
NEON, the renowned film distribution company, has acquired the rights for Damian McCarthy's latest genre film, Hokum. The first look at this supernatural horror movie has been shared via Twitter, offering a glimpse into the chilling atmosphere that awaits viewers.
In the shared image, Adam Scott, who starred in Severance, can be seen with a bewildered expression and foggy spectacles. His character, covered in wet muck, stands amidst a wide, grubby curtain and a satin-sheeted bed, hinting at the unsettling surroundings of the film.
The plot of Hokum revolves around Scott's character, a horror novelist, who travels to rural Ireland to scatter his parents' ashes. Unbeknownst to him, the inn he's booked to stay at is haunted by an ancient witch.
Peter Coonan (Bad Sisters) and David Wilmot (Bodkin) are part of the supporting cast in Hokum, although the characters they play and their roles in the story have not been revealed in the shared first look image.
McCarthy, known for his twist-loving films, is expected to deliver another plot filled with unexpected turns in Hokum. His previous works, such as Caveat (2020), have explored psychological trauma and isolation, with the protagonists becoming convinced they're sharing their surroundings with the conduit of a malevolent entity.
Interestingly, the conduit in Caveat was a toy rabbit, while in Oddity, it was a wooden mannequin. McCarthy's film Oddity boasts a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, further raising anticipation for Hokum.
Despite the excitement, NEON has not yet announced a specific release date for Hokum. Readers can keep up with the latest updates on upcoming horror movies in our guide, available for checkout. NEON's tweet, however, suggests that Hokum will be releasing "coming soon".
Stay tuned for more details on this intriguing new film from Damian McCarthy and the talented cast of Hokum.
