Adequate sunshine amid DWD's summer season - July offsetting drought conditions
The summer of 2025 in Germany was marked by warm temperatures, abundant sunshine, and below-average rainfall, according to data from the German Weather Service (DWD).
The average temperature during the summer months (June, July, and August) was 18.3 degrees Celsius, which is 2.0 degrees more than the average of the reference period 1961 to 1990. This made it a relatively warm but not record-breaking summer.
June and August were significantly drier than average, while July helped mitigate the drought. Nationally, around 227 liters of rain per square meter fell, which is five percent less than the long-term average. The highest national daily precipitation was recorded in Todtmoos in the Black Forest with 111.7 liters per square meter on August 20th.
On the other hand, there was often plenty of sunshine, especially in the southwest. Some places in the region registered over 800 hours of sunshine. Compared to the reference period 1991 to 2020, an increase of around 10 percent was achieved in sunshine hours.
Baden-Württemberg was the wettest federal state with an average of 310 liters per square meter, while Saarland was not only the warmest but also the sunniest federal state with 805 hours of sunshine.
The highest national temperature of 2025 was recorded in Andernach on the Middle Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate with 39.3 degrees on July 2nd. There were "cool phases" in July, according to DWD, before a second heatwave in mid-August brought temperatures of up to 37 degrees again. While it was relatively cool in July, July was also extremely wet. The nights in summer were sometimes extremely cool, with the lowest value in Deutschneudorf-Brüderwiese in the Ore Mountains on August 24th at 0.6 degrees.
Compared to the current reference period of 1991 to 2020, there was an increase of 0.7 degrees in the average summer temperature. The average precipitation in the Alps was 500 to 700 liters per square meter.
In local news, Hamm experienced a busy summer with Open Doors at HSHL and Hamm erFahren 2025, a party by the Fire Department, and new postal voting documents for the election of the Integration Council.
In conclusion, the summer of 2025 was a unique season in Germany, with its warm, often dry, and very sunny weather. While it may have had its challenges, such as the drought in June and August, the overall summer was relatively mild compared to previous records.
