One of the most noticeable changes is the relaxation of the dress code regulations. Gone are the days of strict formal wear, as golfers now have the freedom to opt for more casual clothing options. Hoodies, once considered unacceptable on the golf course, are now allowed in many clubs, with many professional golfers embracing the trend. The hood of a golf hoodie is rarely used, but its introduction into golf clothing is a welcome addition to the relaxed dress code.

Short socks with shorts are also now allowed in many traditional golf clubs, though some still require long socks. The best golf clothing and shoe brands have played a role in forcing golf's hand in relaxing its dress code regulations, with many clubs now allowing trainer-style golf shoes on the course and in the clubhouse.

The rules of the game have also evolved to reflect this shift towards practicality and comfort. Players now have the choice to putt with the flagstick in or out on the putting green, a change that was introduced six years ago. The use of apps for scoring rounds is increasing, with many handicap rounds being submitted on England Golf's MyEG app.

Another significant change is the flexibility in tee choice. It is now common to play off whichever tees a player chooses at about 50% of golf clubs, although this is not yet universal. The Hindhead Golf Club, for example, allows players to choose their tees.

However, not all traditions have been abandoned. If a player moves their own ball while searching for it, they must replace it on its original spot, a rule that remains unchanged. The penalty for moving one's own ball while searching for it was removed in 2019, but the responsibility to avoid moving the ball remains with the player.

The relaxation of golf rules and dress codes is reflective of a broader societal shift towards inclusivity and flexibility. The golfing world is becoming more accessible, welcoming a wider range of players and styles.
