AI-enhanced Dolby Vision 2 revealed: Intelligent image enhancement, creator control features, and additional improvements highlighted
Dolby Vision 2 Announced: A Potential Leap in Picture Quality
Dolby, the renowned audio and video technology company, has unveiled Dolby Vision 2 at IFA 2025, marking an evolution of its premium HDR technology launched in 2014. The new technology is set to be available starting from late 2025 to 2026, with Hisense and TCL as early partners offering TVs supporting the technology.
Dolby Vision 2 promises to be a significant improvement in picture quality, taking advantage of today's premium displays that can achieve significantly higher peak-brightness levels than earlier generations. The technology will come in two versions, with more widespread adoption expected in the second half of 2026.
One of the key features of Dolby Vision 2 is its redesigned image-engine that works alongside bi-directional tone mapping. This allows for dynamic metadata that optimizes HDR content scene by scene, a significant departure from HDR10's static approach.
Sports and gaming receive dedicated attention in Dolby Vision 2 with specific optimization features. The technology also introduces Authentic Motion, the world's first creative-driven motion control tool for managing motion on a shot-by-shot basis.
Dolby Vision 2 also aims to address the common complaint of HDR content appearing too dark in certain lighting conditions with Precision Black technology. Additionally, the technology introduces AI smarts and expanded creative tools for more intelligent picture optimization.
Hisense will be the first manufacturer to implement Dolby Vision 2, in its RGB-MiniLED television range. Other manufacturers such as Sony, LG, Panasonic, and Philips have embraced Dolby Vision alongside other formats. French media company CANAL+ has committed to supporting Dolby Vision 2 across its content library.
However, Samsung continues to support HDR10+ exclusively and does not support Dolby Vision on any of its products. Specific availability dates and pricing for Dolby Vision 2-equipped televisions have not yet been announced.
Hisense has indicated that timing details will follow at a later date. Further details about the differences in AI processing, use of large platforms such as OpenAI, or the specifics of Light Sense or bi-directional tone mapping were not provided.
We are hoping to see Dolby Vision 2 in action at IFA 2025. With its focus on dynamic metadata, bi-directional tone mapping, and AI-powered optimization, Dolby Vision 2 is poised to deliver a potentially significant improvement in picture quality. We look forward to testing it and bringing you our findings.
