Aid package consisting of essential food items and medicine dispatched by UAE to sustain earthquake victims in Afghanistan
In the aftermath of a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan on August 31, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dispatched aid to offer a lifeline to affected communities. The tremor, which occurred approximately 27km north-east of Jalalabad, was followed by at least five aftershocks and two more powerful earthquakes on Tuesday and Thursday last week.
On Monday, an airlift from Dubai Humanitarian sent 84 tonnes of medical supplies, shelter materials, and relief items to Afghanistan. The value of this aid was Dh3.4 million ($930,000). The relief effort was part of an air and sea aid route established by the UAE, organized in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN Humanitarian Response Depot, and the UN Children's Fund.
The earthquake hit remote areas in mountainous provinces of Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan. President Sheikh Mohamed directed teams from Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, the National Guard, and the Joint Operations Command to assist in the response to the disaster.
Prior to this airlift, the Emirates Red Crescent had delivered its first batch of medical aid to Afghanistan. On Sunday night, the UAE sent three aid planes carrying 105 tonnes of food to the stricken country.
The aid sent by the UAE is crucial in the wake of the earthquake that has claimed more than 2,200 lives. The earthquake struck 8km below the Earth's surface, causing extensive damage in the affected areas.
The relief effort from the UAE is a testament to their commitment to humanitarian aid and disaster response. The country has a long history of providing aid during times of crisis, and this latest effort is no exception. The UAE continues to stand with the people of Afghanistan in their time of need.
