Aiming Ahead: Plans of Sophie Walz, the newly appointed opera director

Sophie Walz, aged 42, has been promoted to the role of Opera Director at the State Theatre Augsburg. Born in Ulm, Walz's path to the theater was not predetermined, but her experiences in theatre work in the East, particularly in Dessau and Zwickau, were formative and deepened her understanding of theatre as a societal place.

Walz's artistic interests lie in early music and contemporary opera. Forgotten singspiels and Mozart's Da Ponte operas like "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni" are of interest to her. Moreover, she appreciates Kaija Saariaho's compositions, which are on her wishlist.

Walz was inspired to pursue a career in theater through her parents, both teachers, and the Ulm Opera Director Klaus Rak. Her move to Augsburg in 2017 was influenced by closeness to family and a familiar working relationship. Since then, she has been part of the State Theatre Augsburg, initially as the Head Dramaturg for Music Theatre and Ballet.

Walz has done foundational work, shaped artistic processes, and addressed infrastructural challenges at the State Theatre Augsburg. She has set up the interim venue in the Martini-Park at the State Theatre Augsburg. Walz takes over the ensemble of her predecessor Daniel Herzog, appreciating the structured way of working and the focus on ensemble care that he instilled.

Walz shares a goal with the State Theatre Augsburg to further develop the music theater in the city. She is driven by two goals as Opera Director: transparent, binding communication and the establishment of a lived feedback culture.

When director AndrΓ© BΓΌcker called her in 2017, Walz did not hesitate to accept the offer to join the State Theatre Augsburg. Sophie Walz, who has lived in Lechhausen, Augsburg since her move, finds relaxation by the Lech river in the city.

Walz never felt drawn to perform on stage, instead developing a strong sense for structures, connections, and dramaturgy. Her experiences in Dessau and Zwickau, where she struggled with precarious means but also experienced deep connections with colleagues and the audience, have shaped her approach to theatre.

In her new role, Walz aims to continue the successful work of her predecessor while bringing her unique perspective and vision to the State Theatre Augsburg. As she embarks on this new chapter, the theatre community eagerly awaits the impact of her leadership.
