Airport's Runway Line Marking and Painting Updates at Guernsey
Guernsey Airport is set to undergo a significant refurbishment project, with the runway set to be closed overnight for three weeks. The Guernsey Airport Authority has announced this latest phase of maintenance work, which aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of the airport surfaces and equipment.
Airlines and other stakeholders have received advance notification of the works, which will involve the repainting of line markings, the renewal of aiming points, and the repainting of side stripes and threshold markings. The centrelines, broad white stripes running down the centre of the runway, will also be repainted to help pilots align aircraft for take-offs and landings.
The numbers at either end of the runway (09 and 27) denote coordinates (090 and 270 degrees) for pilots, while the 'piano keys' threshold markings indicate the start of safe landing and take-off zones. The line markings will be renewed with high-durability reflective paint suitable for airport runways.
The Guernsey Ports apologizes for any disruption caused by the works, ensuring it is kept to the minimum level necessary to complete the work. Medevacs will be able to operate as normal during the works.
To avoid disruption to flight schedules, the repainting will occur overnight. However, increased noise levels are expected during the works, particularly over the next week due to surface cleaning before repainting.
Earlier this year, essential upgrades to Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) systems took place, replacing aging equipment. The Guernsey Airport Authority is responsible for carrying out maintenance work and repainting the lines at Guernsey Airport.
The airport's operating hours will not be extended while the works are underway. Guernsey Ports encourages passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport and to allow extra time for their journey.
Despite the temporary disruption, the refurbishment project is crucial for the continued safety and efficiency of Guernsey Airport. The works are part of a wider programme of preventative maintenance to ensure the airport remains a vital transport hub for the island.
