Alarm Sounding: Anticipation of 84 Sirens on September 11th
In Wuppertal, Germany, the local fire department is taking steps to ensure the safety of its residents. Twice a year, the city conducts a siren test as part of a nationwide emergency preparedness drill in North Rhine-Westphalia, in collaboration with the federal government.
The test alarm serves a dual purpose. It not only checks the smooth operation of the systems but also aims to raise awareness among the public. For those who may not have heard the sirens or only faintly, some mobile sirens will be in operation during the warning day.
Currently, there are 74 active stationary sirens in Wuppertal. Two more stationary facilities are undergoing renovation in the city. By the end of this year, the fire department plans to bring four more siren locations into operation, expanding the coverage area. However, the exact locations of these new sirens have not been specified publicly.
During the siren test, the initial signal heard is a one-minute continuous tone, signifying "all clear" - no danger. This is followed by a one-minute rising and falling siren tone, which indicates a warning to the population. After about ten minutes, the test ends with the repeated one-minute continuous tone for all clear.
In case of an emergency, listeners are advised to turn on the radio, pay attention to further information, seek shelter in buildings, close doors and windows, and inform neighbours. It's also important to note that in addition to the siren test, warning apps on mobile phones are activated during emergencies. Cell Broadcast sends warning messages to newer phones, even if no warning app is installed.
If you don't hear a siren in Wuppertal on the warning day, please inform the fire department via email at [email protected]. The fire department in Wuppertal can mount ten mobile sirens on their vehicles, ensuring coverage in all areas of the city.
An official all clear will be issued via the NINA app around 11:45 AM. Stay safe, Wuppertal!
