Alcaraz outpaces Djokovic, securing a place in the US Open finals
In a thrilling turn of events at the 2022 US Open, 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz clinched a hard-fought victory over Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. The match, which lasted two hours and 23 minutes, saw Alcaraz triumph 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
The second set was decided by a tiebreaker, with Alcaraz winning back-to-back points on his own serve to secure the set. Djokovic, who looked labored in the third set, never looked close to breaking back.
Djokovic converted his only break point of the match in the second set. However, an early break in the third set due to a double-fault proved costly for the Serbian. Alcaraz, on the other hand, produced an outright flicked passing winner to break Djokovic in the first set.
The young Spaniard was broken only twice in the entire tournament before the semi-final, and he did not face a single break point in the first set against Djokovic. Alcaraz finished the match with 31 winners and 30 unforced errors.
Djokovic, who is 16 years older than Alcaraz, admitted that he struggled to keep up with the youngster as the match moved into a third set. He said, "It is difficult to see how I can compete against Alcaraz and Sinner in best-of-five sets grand slam matches."
Despite the defeat, Djokovic expressed happiness with his level of tennis, but admitted that the physicality of best-of-five set matches is a challenge. He hinted that he would be open to playing more best-of-three set tournaments in 2026.
The US Open final will see Alcaraz face the winner of the semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Alcaraz is yet to drop a set at the 2022 US Open, making him a strong contender for the title.
