Amartya Sen Voices Concern Over Harassment of Bengali-Speaking Individuals in India

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has expressed concerns about growing linguistic intolerance in India, particularly towards Bengali-speaking people, following media reports of harassment in BJP-ruled states.

During a public discussion in Kolkata on August 23, 2023, Sen, who was born in West Bengal's Santiniketan, expressed potential concern about being sent back to Bangladesh due to his ancestral home being in Dhaka. He jokingly suggested that he might be sent back to Dhaka, where his family has roots, due to recent incidents.

Media reports indicate that Bengali-speaking persons from West Bengal are being accused of being from Bangladesh and are being pushed towards that country. Sen highlighted the diversity of Indian civilization and emphasized the importance of celebrating every cultural identity, including Bengali and Punjabi.

Sen did not provide any further information about the specific instances of harassment or professional hurdles faced by Bengali-speaking individuals. However, he did claim that Bengali-speaking individuals are facing professional hurdles and instances of disrespect.

The economist called for the history of the Bengali language, culture, and civilization to be highlighted and for respect for Bengali culture. If respect for Bengali culture is not given, Sen suggested that protests should occur.

Sen has been particularly concerned about the northeastern regions of India, especially Assam, where Bengali-speaking people have faced discrimination. He did not claim that the Bengali culture and civilization are the best, but instead advocated for their recognition and respect.

The comments were made in a humorous manner by Sen, but the concerns are particularly focused on Bengali-speaking people in various states of India. Sen considered speaking in French as a way to avoid potential issues, but he does not know the language.

The comments were reported by PTI.
