New Commemorative Coin Honours Princess Royal's 75th Birthday

The Royal Mint has unveiled a new commemorative coin to celebrate the 75th birthday of Princess Anne, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The coin, dubbed the "Anne-iversary coin," is now available for purchase from the Royal Mint's website.

The design of the coin features a portrait of Princess Anne wearing the Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara and her hair swept up in her signature bouffant style. Anne is shown staring directly at the camera, with an aquamarine pendant and matching earrings adorning her neck. The obverse of the coin showcases a depiction of the King who gave the coin creation his final sign-off in honour of his sister.

The coin's design includes the inscription "The Princess Royal - Celebrating 75 Years - Duty and Devotion." The portrait on the coin is based on a photograph taken by John Swannell, a Royal Photographic Society fellow. Thomas T Docherty, who designed the coin, said it reflects the princess's "strength of character" and "understated elegance."

Princess Anne, known for her no-fuss approach, turns 75 on August 15. In 2024, she carried out nearly 400 official engagements, the most of any member of the royal family, despite being rushed to intensive care and spending five nights in hospital after being struck by a horse.

In addition to the standard brilliant uncirculated edition, which costs £17.50, other versions of the £5 coin are also available, such as silver proof, silver proof piedfort, and gold proof, with varying prices. The coin is also being sold as part of three sets, featuring either a single George VI threepence or florin, or multiple George VI coins from 1950, the year the princess was born, with the prices ranging from £25 to £4,500.

The first official UK coin to honour the Princess Royal has been long-awaited, and this commemorative coin is a fitting tribute to her remarkable life of service. The coin was personally approved by the princess, making it a unique collector's item for royal enthusiasts and coin collectors alike.
