The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) hosted another successful Wimbledon tournament in 2023, with the event's revenue reaching an impressive Β£409 million, or approximately $555 million. This marks a 162% increase in revenue over the past decade.

The AELTC operates the tournament and the playing grounds, with media contracts, primarily from ABC and ESPN parent Walt Disney Co. in the U.S. and the BBC in the U.K., accounting for nearly half of Wimbledon's total revenue. The BBC pays about Β£60 million ($82 million) annually for Wimbledon broadcast rights through 2027. However, after 2027, these rights will go up for bidding.

The Wimbledon 2024 tournament is projected to generate over half a billion dollars in revenue, a testament to the tournament's growing popularity and financial success.

One of the significant costs for Wimbledon is providing sizable purses to attract tennis' best talent. This year's Wimbledon prize pot is Β£53.5 million, with the men's and women's champions each receiving Β£3 million. The lowest winnings at Wimbledon are Β£4,500, for the winners of first-round mixed doubles.

Ticket sales and marketing partners are two other primary sources of revenue for Wimbledon. The USTA generated $581 million in 2023, the majority from the U.S. Open in Queens, N.Y., while Wimbledon's non-tournament revenue was just $709,000 last year.

In the women's final of Wimbledon 2023, Amanda Anisimova will face No. 8 Iga Świątek. The men's favourite to win for the third straight year is Alcaraz. The results of the women's semifinals have been updated in a related story.

The leisurely lawn game of croquet is still played at Wimbledon, but has yet to catch broadcasters' eyes. Nonetheless, the increase in revenue and the excitement surrounding the tournament indicate a bright future for Wimbledon. After 2027, the broadcast rights will be up for grabs, and it will be interesting to see how the bidding process unfolds.

As for the future, the AELTC shares 90% of its Wimbledon profits with The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), ensuring that the sport continues to thrive in the UK. With the success of Wimbledon 2023 and the promising outlook for 2024, tennis fans can look forward to more exciting tournaments in the years to come.
