Anticipated Features of the iPhone 14
The tech world is abuzz with anticipation as Apple prepares to unveil its latest offering, the iPhone 14. Here's a rundown of what we can expect from this year's models.
According to reports, the iPhone 14 Pro is set to receive an upgrade with the new A16 processor, while the non-Pro version will continue with the A15 chip. This move, reminiscent of Google's Pixel lineup and Samsung's Ultra variant phones, suggests that Apple is aiming for more significant differences between the Pro and non-Pro models, extending beyond cameras and screen size.
The iPhone 14 is expected to hit the market after Apple's developer conference, and it seems that a significant model makeover is not on the cards until a future release. The device is expected to retain its flat metal edges and rounded corners, with a larger display size option available. Specifically, the iPhone 14 may offer a 6.1 and 6.7-inch screen size in both Pro and standard configurations.
One of the most intriguing features of the iPhone 14 Pro could be its high-resolution camera. Following the strategy of the latest Android phone releases, such as the S22 Ultra, the Pro model might combine pixels to extract data, offering a potentially superior photography experience.
Apple is also reportedly working on satellite connectivity for the iPhone 14, which would enable emergency reporting or short text messaging when out of range. This feature appears to resemble the AirTags' proprietary mesh network. Suspected manufacturers for this service include Globalstar, though Apple is believed to be using an external provider for this feature instead of its own modem C1.
However, regular phone calls over satellite networks are not expected to be a feature of the iPhone 14's satellite connectivity. The strategy of offering different specs for Pro and non-Pro models could be a strategic move to better cater to Apple's overseas customer base, particularly China, where the Max is the highest-selling version of the iPhone, and keeping that screen size limited to a particular price point hinders Apple's growth potential within that key market.
Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly working on embedding Face ID and the front-facing camera into the display, but this feature is still several years away. The notch is expected to return on the iPhone 14, housing Face ID and the front-facing camera.
The iPhone 14's features and release are anticipated to be discussed at Apple's WWDC, scheduled for the week of June 6-10. The iPhone 13 recently underwent a minty green refresh, hinting at Apple's continued focus on design and colour options.
