The German Ministry of Defense has announced a new military service, set to commence next year, that will offer significant benefits to professional soldiers. According to a ministry spokesperson, this change in the existing military service structure will not result in significant financial impacts.

The announcement was made in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, in response to a request by the dts news agency. The new military service will provide free train rides for soldiers, aiming to encourage more soldiers to use public transportation, specifically trains.

The spokesperson confirmed that the costs for this new initiative are already accounted for in the budget, with the costs for the new military service reflected in the 2026 budget draft. This long-term commitment will be considered in future budgets as well.

The German Armed Forces, currently boasting a strength of 180,000 soldiers, are expected to grow by up to 30,000 volunteers in the coming years. The increase in soldiers using trains due to the new military service benefits is relatively small compared to the overall strength of the armed forces.

The Ministry of Defense does not anticipate significant financial impacts from the new military service. However, the specific organization responsible for financing the "Train Travel in Uniform" initiative linked to the German Bundeswehr's new military service starting next year remains unclear.

The new military service is a result of the ministry's efforts to attract more volunteers and provide additional benefits to soldiers. The spokesperson emphasized that the new military service is for professional soldiers only.

The costs for the new military service are already accounted for in the budget, ensuring that the "Train Travel in Uniform" budget is not expected to significantly increase or burst due to the new military service. This move is expected to contribute positively to the morale and convenience of the soldiers, making service in the German Armed Forces even more appealing.
