Anticipated Starship Capture Attempt by SpaceX in 2026, Elon Musk Announces

SpaceX's Starship V3, a robust vehicle proven to withstand the rigours of reentry without shedding debris, is set to make its entrance in 2026. The production and testing of this iteration are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The anticipation for Starship V3 stems from the success of its predecessor, the Starship, which underwent a successful 10th flight test conducted by SpaceX, meeting all primary objectives.

While SpaceX is also working on Starship V4, a more powerful version with 42 Raptor engines, the focus currently shifts towards Starship V3. The heavy flight activity of Starship V3 throughout 2026 suggests an active role in SpaceX's missions.

However, the exact timeline for the first Starship catch using the Mechazilla launch tower remains uncertain. Elon Musk has hinted that this milestone could occur between Flight 13 and Flight 15 of Starship V3.

In a unique development, the latest Starship flight test saw the first-of-its-kind deployment of Starlink satellite simulators, resembling a Pez dispenser.

It's worth noting that SpaceX made history with the catch of a returning Super Heavy Booster using Mechazilla during Flight 5.

As for Starship V4, scheduled to debut in 2027, its development continues behind the scenes. The rapid development cycle ensures that both Starship V3 and V4 are progressing at a steady pace.

However, the specifics regarding the exact timing of when SpaceX will begin using the "Mechazilla" arms to catch Starship during its re-entry phase, and the specific flight number for this milestone, have yet to be officially announced.
