Two years after the German team failed to win any medals at the World Championships in Budapest, former decathlete Frank Busemann has issued a word of caution about having too high expectations for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.

Busemann, who won an Olympic silver medal in 1996, praised the athletic achievements and friendly charisma of current decathlete Leo Neugebauer, stating he does German athletics "unfathomable good." However, he also noted that Neugebauer, now a full professional after completing his studies, may face a risk as he thinks about sports all day long, which could potentially be counterproductive.

Neugebauer, who won bronze for decathlon at the previous summer's Olympic Games in Paris, trained in the USA for the 2023 World Championships. Despite leading the decathlon after the first day of the World Championships in 2023, he ultimately finished in fifth place. Busemann, however, commended Neugebauer's performance in Paris, stating he was more sovereign compared to his performance in Budapest.

Malaika Mihambo, who won silver for long jump in the previous summer, and the German women's sprint relay, who unexpectedly won bronze, also contributed to the four medals won by the German team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Busemann noted that the 4 medals indicate the upper limit of what is possible, but warned against having unrealistic expectations for the upcoming World Championships.

Busemann will again be an expert for the ARD in Tokyo during the upcoming World Championships, providing insightful commentary on the German team's performance. The 2023 Athletics World Championships will not see a German medal drought, according to Busemann, but he emphasised the importance of maintaining realistic expectations.

Leo Neugebauer is currently training in Leipzig, Germany, as he prepares for future competitions. His bronze medal in the decathlon at the previous summer's Olympic Games serves as a testament to his dedication and potential for future success. As the World Championships in Tokyo approach, the focus will be on the German team to see if they can build upon their recent successes and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
