Antique Calendar Predicts Autumn's Initial Snowfall Date

Heavy storms have caused chaos on the Adriatic highway in Croatia, but the future may hold a more promising outlook. According to traditional farmers' rules and modern weather models, this fall could be a "Golden October."

The Hundred-Year Calendar, a collection of weather predictions based on observations from the 17th century, is generating excitement for the upcoming season. The calendar predicts a warm start to September, with the first half expected to have pleasant weather. This is followed by an extended period of fine weather from October 4th to the 28th.

However, the calendar's predictions should be taken with a grain of salt. Bernhard Mayer, holder of the Chair of Experimental Meteorology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) in 2023, described the old forecasts as serious attempts to observe and predict the weather at the time, but with a hit rate of only 60 to 70 percent.

Modern weather models are not always correct, according to Mayer. Despite this, the Hundred-Year Calendar continues to predict a "Golden October," with October's good weather extending until November 18th. From the 19th to 30th of November, the calendar predicts snow and great cold. Towards the end of October, the calendar announces winter heralds: frost on the 29th, snow on the 30th, and cloudy weather on the 31st.

Meanwhile, another concern is arising on the Sasso Nero mountain due to increased tourism. A new species of hikers is causing concern, potentially disrupting the delicate balance of the mountain ecosystem.

For those interested in learning more about these farmers' rules, a practical PDF can be found at this link. One such rule suggests that if September is beautiful in the first days, it will announce the whole fall. Another rule, "If the weather is nice on St. Lawrence's Day (August 10th), you can see a good fall," fuels hope for a "golden fall."

In other news, the former Google CEO has criticized certain degree programs as a waste of time in the USA. Earthquakes have also been reported in the Italian supervolcano region, with one reported as "really impressive."

As we move into the fall, it seems that both nature and society will continue to present challenges and opportunities. Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds.
