Apartment inferno results in one fatality
A fire broke out in a multi-family building located on EichenstraΓe in Niederschoenhausen early this morning. The fire was reported at around 4:25 AM, and an acoustically triggered fire alarm alerted employees and residents to the emergency.
Firefighters were promptly called to the scene and successfully evacuated the building before extinguishing the fire, which was located on the third floor. A smoky smell was noticed coming from the affected apartment.
During firefighting operations, a suspicious object was found in the apartment. Specialists from the Kriminaltechnisches Institut of the Landeskriminalamt were called to examine the object, and they have since deemed it harmless.
Unfortunately, a lifeless man was found in the apartment, and he has been identified as the 47-year-old resident. The authorities are treating his death as a result of the fire.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with the fire investigation unit of the Landeskriminalamt Berlin now leading the investigation. The authority responsible for investigating the origin of a fire in Germany typically falls to the police investigative authority, often supported by fire protection and forensic institutes.
The police will take witness statements and may commission forensic science institutes to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. The public is asked to avoid speculation until the investigation is complete.
