The Central government has made significant strides in addressing the vacancies in the Kerala High Court, clearing the appointments of three additional judges as permanent judges on September 1. However, the official notification for the fourth judge, Justice Chellappan Nadar Pratheep Kumar, is yet to be released.

The two newly-appointed permanent judges are Joseph Mathew and Shaji P. Chaly, whose names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium in June 2023. They join Johnson John and Gopinathan Unnithan Girish, who were already appointed as permanent judges, although their appointments are awaiting official confirmation.

If Justice Chellappan Nadar Pratheep Kumar's appointment as a permanent judge is officially confirmed, the Kerala High Court's strength will increase to 48, filling most of the vacancies that currently exist. As of September 1, the High Court is functioning with a temporary shortage of judges due to vacancies, with only 47 out of its sanctioned strength of 47 judges in place.

The process of judicial appointments in the Kerala High Court involves recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium and final approval from the Central government's Law Ministry. The Central government's decision to clear the appointment of Justice Chellappan Nadar Pratheep Kumar as a permanent judge is pending the release of the official notification.

The appointment of these four permanent judges could help address the current shortage of judges in the Kerala High Court, ensuring that the court can continue to function efficiently and effectively. The public eagerly awaits the official notifications for these appointments, which will bring much-needed stability and continuity to the court.
