Arrest made: Man in Alabama apprehended for purported threats against a church in California

In a statement released yesterday, the Orange County Sheriff's Department announced the arrest of Joshua Michael Richardson, 38, from Alabama, in response to criminal threats against St. Michael's Abbey, a Norbertine Catholic monastery in Orange County, California.

The threats against the abbey began on August 28 with suspicious, threatening emails. This was followed by additional threats reportedly made in person at the church. A cache of ammunition, body armor, high-capacity magazines, brass knuckles, and knives were found in Richardson's vehicle, according to the sheriff's department.

The statement from the Orange County Sheriff's Department stresses the importance of community members being vigilant in reporting suspicious activity. It encourages everyone to trust their instincts and report unusual behaviour. Information can be submitted anonymously to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS or OCSheriff.gov/OCCrimeStoppers. Alternatively, the sheriff's office can be contacted directly at (714) 647-7000.

Jarryd Gonzales, head of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Orange, issued a statement expressing gratitude for the quick action of the authorities. He also mentioned that in today's environment, parishes and schools are strengthening security efforts and remaining vigilant to protect their parishioners, students, and staff.

The ongoing investigation by the Orange County Sheriff's Department into the threats against St. Michael's Abbey is a testament to their commitment to ensuring the safety of all community members. The priests and seminarians at the abbey live a monastic life but also have apostolic ministries at schools, parishes, and prisons in Southern California.

The statement from Jarryd Gonzales was made in response to increased threats against churches, with recent events in Minnesota referred to as a point of concern. He emphasised the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and the community.

It's worth noting that there are no available search results or credible sources providing information about Richardson's past criminal record prior to this case. Richardson was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's department's statement also encourages community members to report any suspicious activity, as a call from a community member could prevent a crime. This underscores the crucial role that the community plays in maintaining public safety.

In these challenging times, it's reassuring to see the swift and decisive action taken by the Orange County Sheriff's Department in response to the threats against St. Michael's Abbey. The abbey, like many other churches, continues to serve its community and will undoubtedly benefit from the increased vigilance and support from law enforcement and the community.
