In the cultural and landscape area of today's Lower Saxony, the influence of both Non-Jewish and Jewish societies has been profound. One of the most significant repositories of this shared history is the Museum Behind St. Aegidien in Brunswick.

The museum houses the permanent exhibition "A Part of Us. German-Jewish Stories from Lower Saxony," which showcases notable Jewish personalities and groups from the region. This exhibition, preserved since 1924, features the baroque interior of the former Hornburg Synagogue.

Karl Steinacker, the then director of the Fatherland Museum, recognized the cultural-historical significance of the synagogue and had it transferred to the museum. After the Jewish community in the south of Brunswick emigrated, the synagogue was left to decay until it found a new home at the museum.

The exhibition uses individual fates from the 18th to the 21st century to demonstrate that the identities of minorities do not have to be abandoned for active participation in a heterogeneous society. Through numerous donations, a unique collection was created in the museum, reflecting both Jewish religious cult and German and Lower Saxon culture.

Admission prices for the permanent exhibitions are affordable, with Adults paying €4, reduced admission costing €3, Children (from 6 years) €2, and free entry for children under 5 years. For those interested in visiting both the Museum Behind St. Aegidien and St. Ulrici-Brothers, a COMBINATION DAY TICKET is available.

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5:30 pm, with Mondays closed. For more information on events such as "St. Aegidien in the BLIK" or to plan your visit, you can contact the museum via Tel.: 0531 12252424, Email: [email protected], or through their website: https://3landesmuseen-our-website.de/our-websiteisches-landesmuseum.

The museum's website also provides information on events and special exhibitions, which may have varying admission prices. The Jewish population in Germany, though a minority, is an integral part of the history of Lower Saxony, and the Museum Behind St. Aegidien serves as a testament to this rich heritage.
