Art studio at Kunsthaus Wiesbaden, located within the Schulberg, resumes operations once more
After eight long years, the Atelierhaus, located in a historic old building at the former Werk and Kunstschule Wiesbaden, has reopened its doors to the public. The city council approved the general renovation of the municipal Kunsthaus in 2015, and the architectural office Lehners & Barbian was commissioned by the Cultural Office to oversee the project.
The Atelierhaus now boasts eleven ateliers spread over four floors, providing a space for regional and international artists to create and showcase their work. The Kunsthalle, which opened in 2011, and the Aula are venues for exhibitions and dialogues about art and society-relevant discourses.
The Kunsthaus hosts six to eight exhibitions annually, with the Aula set to open on September 10, 2025, hosting the exhibition "Faceless. Women in Prostitution" in cooperation with the municipal women's office Wiesbaden.
Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, Culture Commissioner, expressed his delight at the reopening, stating that the Atelierhaus has become an oasis of art and a place for discursive exchange about art. Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende also expressed his pleasure at the reopening, adding that the Atelierhaus is a vital part of the city's cultural landscape.
The Artothek, located within the Kunsthaus, offers art for temporary home use and houses the municipal art collection with 4,000 art treasures for loan. The Werk and Kunstschule moved into its current premises in 1949, which were originally designed as an elementary school in 1863.
Vincent Weber led the Werk and Kunstschule from 1954 to 1965, turning it into a renowned training institution oriented towards the Bauhaus. Funding for the energy optimization of the building was granted from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety.
The reopening of the Atelierhaus will be celebrated on September 6, 2023, with open ateliers, workshops, performances, artist talks, and guided tours. The event is expected to be attended by Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende and Cultural Councilor Dr. Hendrik Schmehl.
Citizens with questions about the Atelierhaus can contact the responsible department or office. The Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden issued this press release, inviting everyone to join in the celebration of the Atelierhaus's history and future.
