The University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden has taken a significant step forward in the realm of diagnostics, becoming the first facility in the Dresden region to use AI-based software in breast cancer detection. The software, known as "Transpara", is provided by the technology company ScreenPoint Medical.
Prof. Ralf-Thorsten Hoffmann, Director of the Institute and Policlinic for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, believes that "Transpara" provides radiologists with a 'second pair of eyes', improving reading accuracy in mammography. This innovative tool is hoped to lead to faster and more reliable breast cancer detection, a crucial step towards higher chances of survival for patients.
The AI-based software "Transpara" compares images with a database of over five million pictures to provide results more quickly. It is particularly adept at detecting even the smallest nodes and calcifications, often precursors of cancerous diseases. This technology is seen as a valuable addition to the diagnostic process, with the professional expertise of radiologists remaining central to treatment success.
Prof. Michael Albrecht, Medical Director of the University Hospital, is optimistic about the future of AI in diagnostics. He believes that the examination using AI will become the standard in diagnostics in the future. It's important to note that approximately one in eight women is affected by breast cancer during her life in Germany, with around 70,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
