Aryna Sabalenka outmatches Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the US Open, causing more distress for the fourth-ranked player.
Aryna Sabalenka, the current world number one, has reached the final of the US Open for the second year in a row. The Belarusian tennis star has had an impressive run so far, advancing without dropping a set.
In the quarterfinals, Sabalenka faced Jessica Pegula, the No. 4-seeded American in the tournament. The match was a rematch from the 2020 US Open final, with Sabalenka coming out on top once again, winning with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sabalenka's victory puts her in the final, where she will face either Naomi Osaka or Amanda Anisimova. The winner of their match will be determined on Friday.
Sabalenka's quest for a second US Open title is not without its challenges. Despite being ranked number one for 42 consecutive weeks, she has not won a major title this season. Despite finishing as the runner-up in Melbourne, Paris, and reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon, a major title has eluded her.
However, Sabalenka is aiming to make history by becoming the first woman to successfully defend her US Open title since Serena Williams won three in a row from 2012-14. If she is successful, she will also put an end to her drought of major titles since her US Open victory last year.
The US Open final match between Sabalenka and her opponent will take place on Saturday, inside the enclosed Arthur Ashe Stadium. Spectators are eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated showdown, which promises to be a thrilling end to the tournament.
