Ashok Leyland and Reliance Industries Reveal India's Premier Hydrogen Fueled Heavy-duty Truck

At India Energy Week in Bangalore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the unveiling of a groundbreaking vehicle - India's first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck. The event took place on February 6, 2023.

The new H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range by Ashok Leyland, the flagship commercial vehicle manufacturing company of the Hinduja Group, is powered by hydrogen fuel and is based on its conventional diesel-based combustion engine. This demonstrates Ashok Leyland's technological leadership and commitment to the Clean Mobility Mission.

The hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck is a significant advancement in the application of hydrogen technology in commercial vehicles. It marks a step towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation in India. Ashok Leyland aims to make India's alternate fuel segment self-reliant and become one of the flag bearers of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign.

The leadership team for the development of the hydrogen-powered truck was led by Andreas Gorbach, technology board member at Daimler Truck. Ashok Leyland, along with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has been developing this unique hydrogen technology over the past year. The collaboration between the two companies has resulted in this flagship project.

The hydrogen-powered truck has been under test since August 2022. N Saravanan, President and Chief Technology Officer of Ashok Leyland, stated that they want to continue their path to innovate and leverage new technologies to be a leader in sustainable and environment friendly mobility.

Ashok Leyland claims that the H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range would help quicker migration to cleaner energy sources at a relatively lower cost delta. The unveiling of the hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck took place on February 6, 2023, with Ashok Leyland demonstrating their technological leadership and commitment to the Clean Mobility Mission.
