Assessment of Flood Risks in the German state of Bavaria by the Bavarian authorities (THW Bayern)

In the aftermath of the severe flooding in southern Bavaria, particularly in Munich, the Technical Relief Organisation of the German Red Cross (THW) has been at the forefront of the recovery efforts since May 30th. Over 3,000 helpers, including operational personnel and various support groups, have been involved in the operation so far.

The THW's core work in civil protection is carried out by half of the volunteers, who form the basis for the organisation's operations. They have been using high-performance pumps like Börger to transport vast amounts of water, helping to alleviate the flood situation.

In addition, so-called cleanup groups have been supporting the efforts with excavators, wheel loaders, and telescopic handlers. These teams have been instrumental in clearing debris and making ways for further recovery efforts.

Mobile Flood Level Teams have also played a crucial role, setting up an automatic and permanent water level monitoring system to monitor waterways and dikes. This system provides essential data to help predict and manage the receding water masses, which are moving very slowly, making further clearing and securing measures more difficult.

The situation in many flood-affected areas is gradually improving, but the work for the THW forces is not yet over. Oil-water mixtures that have leaked due to flooding still need to be treated. Separation facilities operated by the THW have been reducing special waste quantities by around 90%. So far, around 3.5 million liters of oil-water mixture have already been filtered.

The THW is a sought-after supporter for various entities, including fire services, police, aid organisations, and others. In addition to their primary roles, the THW forces have also provided catering for their own and other deployment forces.

The THW is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government, including technical and logistical aid within the EU's civil protection mechanism and for UN organisations. Despite the ongoing preparations for EURO24 in Munich, the THW in Bavaria is still deploying around 100 personnel to continue the flood recovery efforts.

As the floodwaters recede and the cleanup continues, the THW's work in Munich serves as a testament to the organisation's commitment to providing aid and support in times of crisis. The THW, with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, stands ready to continue its vital work in the days and weeks ahead.
