Association for Indian Gaming Outlines Objectives for Midyear Meeting
The Indian Gaming Association (IGA) is hosting its mid-year conference from September 8-10, 2021, at Mystic Lake Casino in Minnesota. This year's conference, themed "Built to Endure", is focusing on strategic adaptation to political, legal, and technological disruptions that are impacting tribal gaming operations across the nation.
Victor Rocha, the chair of the conference, has highlighted the ticking clock regarding the threats to tribal gaming. These threats include sweeping changes in federal policies, the emergence of new gambling platforms such as sweepstakes gambling, offshore crypto casinos, and prediction markets, and the legalization of sports betting in some states. These factors are eroding tribal markets from within, weakening tribal sovereignty, and siphoning revenue, according to Rocha.
The conference will address the economic disruption faced by Indian Country, including sweeping federal budget cuts and mounting trade tariffs. It will also examine how these pressures threaten tribal sovereignty, violate federal obligations, and put long-term economic stability at risk for Native nations across the country.
The first day of the conference will feature a discussion with Minnesota Lt. Gov. and tribal member Peggy Flanagan. The second day will focus on the fight to legalize sports betting in Minnesota, exploring the forces shaping the debate on sports betting legalization.
The conference will also delve into the vulnerability of tribes in the new administration, particularly in regards to education and health departments. It will discuss defending tribal sovereignty against unregulated threats and shaping the future of sports betting in states like Minnesota.
In addition to these discussions, the conference includes a table-top trade show and a session on development, infrastructure, expansion, and renovation of tribal casinos. The third day's theme is "The Threat From Within: Tribal Gaming Under Attack". The overall theme of the conference is "Strengthening tribal gaming to endure 'the age of disruption'".
The conference aims to chart a path forward for tribal gaming, emphasising the importance of adapting to innovations such as e-commerce and sports betting opportunities while confronting political and competitive challenges facing tribal sovereignty in gaming. It encourages tribal leaders and gaming professionals to explore how to leverage new technologies and online platforms to expand gaming enterprises responsibly, ensuring tribal sovereignty and economic benefits to their communities.
Without action, the foundations of tribal gaming could be permanently compromised, according to Rocha. The 2021 IGA mid-year conference is a crucial event for tribal leaders, gaming professionals, and anyone interested in the future of tribal gaming in the United States.
"The conference will touch upon the impact of new gambling platforms like sports betting and sweepstakes gambling on tribal gaming operations, as well as the legalization of sports betting in some states, which Victor Rocha, the chair of the conference, highlighted as threats to tribal markets."
"Moreover, the third day's theme, 'The Threat From Within: Tribal Gaming Under Attack', will delve into the emergence of offshore crypto casinos and prediction markets, and how they pose a challenge to tribal gaming enterprises."
