Ather to Produce Battery Cells in Collaboration with Amara Raja Group
In a significant move for the electric vehicle (EV) industry in India, Amara Raja, a leading battery manufacturer, and Ather Energy, a prominent EV manufacturer, have announced a collaboration.
According to Tarun Mehta, Co-founder & CEO at Ather Energy, the aim of this partnership is to support India's growing energy demand now and in the future. Under the terms of the agreement, Amara Raja will develop and supply NMC, LFP, and other advanced chemistry Lithium-ion batteries to Ather Energy.
This collaboration is expected to contribute to the growth of the domestic EV industry in India. Ather Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amara Raja to manufacture battery cells for its electric scooters, the Rizta and 450 series.
The new collaboration will allow Ather Energy to optimize its production cost and source li-ion cells tailored to its specific requirements. It is worth noting that Ather Energy has been designing and building its battery packs in-house as per Indian Government guidelines for FAME scheme eligibility.
Meanwhile, Amara Raja has entered into a new collaboration with Gotion-InoBat to accelerate its efforts towards manufacturing cell and battery packs customized for Indian conditions. Amara Raja, a subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, aims to become one of India's largest manufacturers of Li-ion and advanced chemistry cells.
In a significant step towards this goal, Amara Raja has announced an investment of ₹9,500 crores to establish a 16 GwH capacity gigafactory in Telangana. Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd, has stated that the company has made significant progress in building world-class facilities for manufacturing cell and battery packs tailored to Indian conditions.
The gigafactory is part of Amara Raja's objective to be a significant player in the Indian Li-ion and advanced chemistry cell market. With this investment, Amara Raja is poised to play a crucial role in India's indigenization of Electric Vehicle technologies.
Ather Energy, on the other hand, recently launched its family electric scooter, the Rizta. The company operates two manufacturing facilities in Hosur, one entirely dedicated to battery production.
