August's stable waters of Seneca Lake host a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB)
The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association has reported a single instance of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) from August 8-14, but conditions on the lake have otherwise been mostly favorable. During this timeframe, dissolved oxygen levels were at 106% saturation, and a steady breeze and cooler mornings have been keeping HABs in check.
However, the association urges lake users to remain vigilant for sudden HAB appearances, especially when water is warm and calm. Residents are advised to avoid water that resembles pea soup, spilled paint, or green streaks near shore. Suspected HABs can be reported to the DEC or by emailing [email protected].
The association continues to monitor the lake for HABs as part of ongoing conservation efforts. In addition to this, they have been treating 30 hemlock trees in Hector to protect them from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.
On a positive note, the surface water temperature during the same period was 77°F, and turbidity, a measure of water clarity, was 0.526 NTU, within the "good" range.
The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association invites the public to attend its annual meeting and volunteer recognition on September 11 at The Oasis @ Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards in Hector. This event will provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about lake protection projects. More information about the event can be found on the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association's website (senecalake.org).
Residents are encouraged to attend and support the association's efforts in maintaining the pristine beauty of Seneca Lake.
