Auto giants General Motors and Hyundai to unveil five jointly-developed vehicles in the American market by 2028, according to a strategic alliance
General Motors (GM) and Hyundai Motor Company have announced a strategic partnership that will result in the development of five vehicles. This collaboration, set to span various propulsion systems, aims to deliver more than 800,000 vehicles a year once production is fully scaled.
The partnership will primarily focus on the Latin American market, with four vehicles planned for Central and South American markets. These include a compact SUV, a car, a pick-up, and a mid-sized pick-up. The production leadership for these vehicles has not been publicly specified, but they are expected to launch in 2028.
In North America, an electrical commercial van is also in the pipeline, with production scheduled to begin in early 2028. GM will lead production of the mid-size truck, while Hyundai will take charge of the compact vehicle and electric van.
The flexible approach to propulsion types requires more complex inbound logistics, as components for both internal combustion and hybrid models must be sourced. To address this, the partnership will consider collaboration across various propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
In a bid to boost cost savings, improve logistics efficiency, and streamline manufacturing, the companies plan joint sourcing initiatives for materials, transport, and logistics. This includes a focus on low-carbon emissions steel and sustainable manufacturing.
GM's senior vice president, Shilpan Amin, has stated that this partnership will be beneficial, particularly in terms of raw material sourcing. Hyundai has also committed $21 billion to its US operations this year, further emphasising the partnership's potential.
Notably, GM's executive director of global logistics and containers, Marcio Lucon, will discuss supply chain re-imagination at the Automotive Logistics & Supply Chain Global conference in Detroit on 23-25th September. Other industry experts from GM, Nissan Group of Americas, DP World, BMW Manufacturing Co, Ford Motor Company, and more will also be attending the conference.
Production of these vehicles will take place in North and South America. As the partnership progresses, it is expected to bring significant advancements in the automotive industry, particularly in the Latin American market.
