Banknotes of B50 and B100 denominations will transition to a polymer material.
New 50- and 100-Baht Polymer Banknotes to be Introduced by the Bank of Thailand
The Bank of Thailand has announced the introduction of new 50- and 100-baht banknotes, marking a shift from traditional paper material to special polymer material. This decision follows the successful rollout of the 20-baht polymer banknote.
The new banknotes, set to circulate from November, will boast extended durability, reducing the need to print at least 350 million replacements annually. With an average lifespan of four times longer than that of paper notes, these polymer banknotes are more cost-effective in the long run. The 20-baht polymer banknote, for instance, has an average lifespan of up to eight years.
The new banknotes will be easier to maintain than traditional paper notes, thanks to their resistance to moisture and dirt. They will also feature upgraded security elements, including a transparent window with embossed numerals and advanced ink that changes color when tilted.
Accessibility has been improved on the new banknotes by incorporating tactile Braille symbols indicating the denomination and raised diagonal lines along the edges for easier identification by touch. This design aims to cater to the visually impaired.
The new 50- and 100-baht polymer notes will be available nationwide through all commercial banks starting from November 21. The current paper 50- and 100-baht notes will remain legal tender and continue to circulate alongside the new versions.
The idea for the introduction of the new banknotes was developed by the Bank of Thailand. The polymer notes are significantly more resistant to wear and tear, making them a practical choice for everyday use.
The new banknotes are not just a step towards modernisation, but also a move towards sustainability, as they will help reduce the environmental impact associated with the production and disposal of paper banknotes.
In conclusion, the introduction of the new 50- and 100-baht polymer banknotes represents a significant milestone in Thai currency, offering benefits in terms of durability, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility. The public can start using the new banknotes from November 21.
