Barriers for Safeguarding the Environment, Set for 2025 Implementation
The Environmental and Nature Office in Gießen is organising a series of engaging events, the 2025 Nature Conservation Hikes, designed to educate and entertain both residents and visitors alike. Here's a rundown of the upcoming activities.
On April 29, kick off the season with a lecture on the Asian Hornet, presented by Dr. Lena Müller, Senior Researcher in Ornithology.
On May 11, delve into the fauna of the waters along the riverbank. This fascinating exploration will provide valuable insights into the aquatic life of Gießen.
For those interested in flora, August 29th offers a presentation on the city's urban space by Jan Garotti from the city's garden office. On the same day, September 7th, Professor Dr. Encarnação will enlighten us about the life of bats, with a special focus on the ecological significance of the quarries in the Philosophenwald and the hunting behavior at the Swan Lake.
May 17 will see a walk along the Schiffenberg, where native herbs in their natural habitats will be the focus of discussion.
June 1 promises an intriguing exploration of the Swan and New Pond's fauna.
For mushroom enthusiasts, there are several opportunities to learn and discover. September 6th and 28th will feature mushroom hikes, with the latter taking place in the Academic Forest Garden. Mushroom expert Pedro Hafermann will lead these forays into the fungal world, each limited to 20 people and requiring prior registration at the environmental office.
On September 24th, a tour through the botanical garden will be led by Dipl.-Biologist and Photographer Hans Bahmer.
Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate two lectures on invasive species.
Finally, on October 10th, "Flechten im Stadtgebiet" (Lichens in the city area) will take place, led by Professor Ute Windisch. On October 12th, a guided tour on the topic of "Forest, Wildlife, and Birds" will take place at the Academic Forest Garden, featuring Annalena Gassmann and Maren Kettwig.
Please note that the bat tour on September 7th may be postponed in case of rain. Each mushroom hike is limited to 20 people and requires prior registration at the environmental office.
