Bavaria Experiences Winter Havoc: THW Teams Active Since Friday Night

In the face of persistent heavy snowfall that has blanketed southern Bavaria since last night, the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) has mobilized over 250 volunteer personnel to help clear roads, airports, and infrastructure, ensuring the safety and continuity of traffic and communication.

The THW, a federal voluntary deployment organization with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, half of whom are operational personnel, has dispatched teams from Munich, Fürstenfeldbruck, Starnberg, Freising, Marktschwaben, and several other local groups to clear snow from federal roads, motorways, and even Munich Airport. Teams are equipped with shovels and Personal Protective Equipment against falls (PPEA) to ensure their safety while working in the harsh conditions.

The THW's specialist knowledge and diverse experiences make it a sought-after supporter for fire services, police, aid organizations, and others. In response to the current situation, THW experts are deployed throughout southern Bavaria, advising cities and municipalities on the snow situation, assessing the current risk of collapse of buildings, and providing technical and logistical assistance.

A leadership group for disaster control (FuGK) has been set up in the counties of Rosenheim and Miesbach, with the THW advising these counties on further proceedings. The search results do not specify which cities in Bavaria are currently being supported by THW teams, but the fire departments in the Freising district have responded to numerous calls related to snowfall, although it does not specify THW involvement.

Notably, Munich has shut down rail and air traffic due to the snowfall, and both Munich Airport and train stations need to be cleared of snow to prevent collapses. In addition, a power outage of a TETRA base station (TBS) was noticed, which ensures the radio communication of aid organizations. The THW local group Landsberg is providing the power supply to maintain communication during this critical time.

As the THW Bavaria has been working for over 12 hours to combat the snow masses, nearly 70 THW deployment forces from the local groups of Lindenberg, Solnhofen, and Kempten are clearing snow from the roof of Oberstaufen station to prevent a collapse.
