Bavaria's Assessment of Potential Flooding Risks

Heavy rain in southern Bavaria has caused severe flooding in the government districts of Swabia, Upper, and Lower Bavaria. The Technical Relief Organization (THW) in Bavaria has been deployed since May 30, combating the aftermath of flood "Orinoco".

More than 7,000 meals are prepared daily by various THW logistics units during the operation. Over 3,000 helpers have been involved so far, with half of the THW's volunteers being operational personnel. The special unit VOST provides a digital situation map for the water management authorities to assess the situation.

The THW forces have pumped out millions of liters of water and filled and installed tens of thousands of sandbags. During the acute phase of the flood, THW forces used Börger rotary piston pumps to transport over 50 million liters of water.

Oil-water mixtures released by the floods are being treated using separation facilities. These facilities can separate oil and water to create usable water and reduce special waste volumes by around 90%. As of now, around 3.5 million liters of oil-water mixture have been filtered.

So-called cleanup groups are still clearing streets and paths of mud, debris, and rubble. The situation in many flood areas is slowly improving, but the work for the THW forces is not yet over. They will continue to work in some regions for a few more days.

The THW is the federal voluntary aid organization with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide. The deployment forces have completed around 83,000 deployment hours so far. The THW provides specialist knowledge and diverse experiences to aid organizations, police, and fire services.

Preparations for deployment at EURO24 are underway in Munich, but the search results do not provide information about the specific THW personnel currently active in the EURO24 standby in Munich or the duration of this standby.

In several districts, the flood reached the highest alert level 4. Over 100 out of 111 Bavarian local associations were involved in the operation. Modern technology and robust equipment, well-trained deployment forces, and coordinated action in cooperation with all involved partners ensured quick decision-making units.

The water masses are receding very slowly, making further clearance and securing measures more difficult. The THW in Bavaria is still deploying around 100 personnel to aid in the recovery efforts.
