In a thrilling match at the Weserstadion, Werder Bremen managed to come from behind and secure a draw against Bayer Leverkusen. The visitors had initially led 3-1, but a determined comeback saw both teams share the points.
Bayer Leverkusen, who remain undefeated in nine matches against Bremen on the road, took an early lead through Patrick Schick. A well-executed assist from Nathan Tella set up Schick for his first goal of the game. Leverkusen's second goal was scored by Schick once again, making it 2-0 in favour of the away team.
However, Werder Bremen refused to give up. Isaac Schmidt scored a crucial goal in the 76th minute to kick-start the comeback. This was followed by a penalty conversion by Romano Schmid, brought about by a foul by Axel Tape on Samuel Mbangula in the box.
The comeback was completed in the 94th minute, when 18-year-old Karim Coulibaly secured a draw for Bremen with a volley at the near post. Coulibaly, who played in the Bundesliga before for Werder Bremen, became the youngest goal scorer in the club's Bundesliga history at 18 years and 99 days old.
Meanwhile, Bremen's expected goals (xG) total rose to 1.91, just ahead of Leverkusen's 1.87. The home team's resilience was further tested when Niklas Stark received a second yellow card for bringing down Christian Konafe in the penalty area.
In a surprising turn of events, Malik Tillman, on his debut for Bayer Leverkusen, scored the opening goal of the match. However, it was not enough to secure a win for the visitors, who extended their league record for the longest unbeaten run in Bundesliga away matches to 35 (W23, D12).
