Bayern Munich dominates and nothing else in German football

FC Bayern Munich, the reigning German champions, are preparing for another title run in the upcoming season. Despite amassing over 80 points last season, coach Vincent Kompany has set his sights on a step forward, choosing to focus on his own team's performance rather than the actions of competitors.

The Bavarian giants have been active in the transfer market, spending around 70 million euros on the Colombian Luis Díaz from Liverpool FC. However, they may have missed out on Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade, who chose other destinations this summer.

Notably, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, and Kingsley Coman have departed from Bayern Munich before the season opener, leaving gaps in the squad that need to be filled.

Max Eberl, Bayern's sports director, has been exploring potential reinforcements, with Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United and Christopher Nkunku (currently at Chelsea) high on the list. However, financial constraints have limited Bayern to loan deals for the time being, and the club remains undecided about Hojlund, who sees himself as a backup striker. Negotiations with Chelsea for Nkunku are ongoing, with the club aiming to use loan deals as a temporary solution until major transfers can be made again in summer 2026.

Borussia Dortmund, another contender, has only made one notable signing so far, Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of Jude Bellingham. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, former champions, are undergoing a significant overhaul, having lost their coach Xabi Alonso and several key players this summer. Jonathan Tah, a defender for Bayer Leverkusen, has joined Bayern Munich.

RB Leipzig, who are facing a similar rebuild after their worst season since joining the Bundesliga, are also in the mix. Key players like Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky, and Jeremie Frimpong have left the club, with Xhaka moving to AFC Sunderland, Hradecky joining AS Monaco, and Frimpong signing for Liverpool FC.

Despite Bayern Munich's strong position, Horst Steffen, Werder Bremen's coach, considers them to have the best team in the Bundesliga. Frank Schmidt, Heidenheim's coach, believes the point gap between teams and FC Bayern was large last season and doesn't expect it to be closed this season.

The Bundesliga, often criticised in England as a training ground for the Premier League, has seen several young talents like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, or Benjamin Šešić leave the league for the Premier League. This trend could potentially shake up the German league this season.

As the season approaches, FC Bayern Munich is the consensus choice for the German champions, but the competition is not overly optimistic about their chances in the Bundesliga. The Bavarian club will need to navigate their transfer business and find the right balance in their squad to maintain their dominance in the league.
