Beechwood alum and current student at VMI, Michael Hatfield, assumes command role in the school's 186th Regiment.
New Commanding Officer at Virginia Military Institute's Bravo Company
Michael Hatfield, a physics major with minors in mathematics and naval science, has been named the new commanding officer of Bravo Company at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). This announcement was made as part of the leadership reveal for the Class of 2026 for the 2025-26 academic year.
Hatfield, who graduated from Beechwood High School, has expressed a strong motivation to improve the culture of Bravo Company. He aims to remove negativity and foster a more positive and supportive environment within the company.
Hatfield's choice to attend VMI and serve as a regimental officer is a way of acknowledging those who have paved the way for his success. He has served as cadre corporal and first sergeant during his 3rd Class and 2nd Class years, respectively, at VMI.
One of Hatfield's fondest memories on post is hearing his name called for first sergeant during 2nd Class announcements. Another cherished memory is serving as cadre during Matriculation Week at VMI. He also received his class ring, which he considers one of his favourite memories at the Institute.
The Corps of Cadets regiment, organized to reflect an Army infantry regiment, has three battalions, each consisting of three line companies. The name of the new commander of Bravo Company for the Class of 2026 is Cadet Captain Samuel T. Jenkins. It's worth noting that a Regimental Band is also part of the Corps of Cadets regiment.
In a recent interview, Hatfield shared a quote that he finds inspiring: "Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is," attributed to Vince Lombardi Jr. This sentiment seems to encapsulate Hatfield's approach as he takes on his new role at VMI, striving for a positive and supportive environment while maintaining a strong focus on achievement.
Following his graduation in 2026, Michael Hatfield will commission into the Navy. His dedication to the Institute and his new role as commanding officer of Bravo Company is a testament to his commitment to the values and traditions of VMI.
