Bergian Lions Fought Resiliently but Ultimately Suffered a Definite Defeat in Berlin's Handball Match
The Bergischer HC (BHC) began their Handball-Bundesliga season with a defeat against the reigning champions, FĂźchse Berlin, in a closely contested match that ended 33:29.
In the first half, Yannick Fraatz, Aron Seesing, and SĂśren Steinhaus, the BHC's new recruit, kept the game close, ensuring that the team was level at halftime. Steinhaus, in particular, brought some momentum to the attack and set up several goals.
However, the final minutes of the game proved disastrous for the BHC. They struggled, allowing Berlin to pull away with a series of five consecutive goals. The scoreline read 27:39 in favour of FĂźchse Berlin.
Fabian Gutbrod, the BHC captain, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance for the first 40 minutes but lamented the last 20. He admitted that the team completely lost their way in the final minutes, resulting in the defeat.
Gutbrod also expressed frustration with the loss, stating that it wasn't necessary. He, along with coach Markus PĂźtz, expressed the team's desire to show improvement in their next game against Erlangen.
PĂźtz, too, was critical of the team's performance in the final minutes, attributing the loss to the team's age. He mentioned that it was better to experience this phase now rather than in more crucial games.
Despite the loss, there were bright spots for the BHC. Johannes Wasielewski, a new signing, made a strong impression in his first Bundesliga game, scoring three goals and providing two assists. Elias Scholtes and Noah Beyer also scored goals for the BHC, bringing them within one at 21:22 and equalizing at 22:22 respectively.
However, the BHC missed a chance just before the break to tie the game, and Jaron Siewert, coach of FĂźchse Berlin, acknowledged that the BHC deserved to be level due to FĂźchse's mistakes. Siewert was satisfied with the final score, winning by twelve goals after a 22:22 draw.
The Bergischer HC will look to bounce back when they face HC Erlangen in their next game on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 19:00 (7 PM) in the Uni-Halle. The match has already taken place, with HC Erlangen winning 33:29.
