Berlin is set to introduce a new technology aimed at improving the city's bicycle traffic, with the launch of the "VeloFlow" display stations scheduled for September 9. Funded by the Berlin.de - The official capital portal, Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and Environment, the project forms part of nationwide funding for environmentally sensitive traffic management, with the Federal Ministry of Transport covering 85% of the total costs.

The project focuses on heavily trafficked routes with high bicycle volumes, with the first installations planned for Kreuzbergstraße in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Further expansions are intended to include Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts, and additional important streets in Berlin after the pilot test on Kreuzbergstraße. More locations for the displays, including Invalidenstraße, Stargarder Straße, and Handjerystraße, are expected to follow soon.

The displays aim to inform cyclists about the next traffic light phase, potentially transmitting data to cars equipped with the appropriate digital features in the future. The test is accompanied scientifically to observe and evaluate whether the displays reduce conflicts at intersections.

The goal is to test the new technology where many cyclists are present. In the long term, the traffic administration aims to make the technology usable for other modes of transport. The cost of one display is around 3,000 euros, with additional expenses for power supply, retrofitting traffic light installations, and planning and digital connection.

This innovative project is set to revolutionise the city's cycling infrastructure, providing a safer and more efficient experience for cyclists and potentially contributing to a reduction in traffic congestion in the long run. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this exciting initiative.
