Berlin's new design mastermind, Hans Stimmann, passes away
Hans Stimmann, Architect and Urban Planner Who Shaped Reunited Berlin, Passes Away
Hans Stimmann, the architect and urban planner who significantly influenced the rebuilding of Berlin after reunification, passed away on August 30, 2022, in his hometown Lübeck. He was 84 years old.
Born in Lübeck, Stimmann began his career as a bricklayer before rising to prominence in the field of urban planning. He played a crucial role in the redevelopment of Lübeck's city center and various areas in Berlin, including Potsdamer and Pariser Platz, Friedrichstraße, and City West.
Stimmann aimed to return Berlin to its historical layout, adhering to the concept of "critical reconstruction." Despite criticisms of his work being uniform and monotonous in places, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) acknowledges that his successes outweigh the criticisms.
Some critics described his work as "much stone, grid facades, and a height limit of 22 meters." However, the FAZ credits Stimmann with preventing "unsightly" developments in Berlin and praises his influence on the image of a German metropolis over the past 50 years.
Stimmann served as Senatsbaudirektor in reunited Berlin from 1991 to 2006. During his tenure, he significantly influenced urban planning in Berlin, leaving a lasting impact on the city's landscape. Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), paid tribute to Stimmann, stating that "our city would look different without him."
Stimmann did not consider himself a "taste dictator" but believed that the key question was what architecture could do for the urban environment. In his later years, he expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of passionate debate about Berlin's design.
Stimmann's career spanned various roles, including professor and renowned author. He wrote in the FAZ in 2024 that discussions about the development of the Molkenmarkt and the future of the Marx-Engels-Forum were "provincial and tinged with party politics."
Stimmann was succeeded by Swiss architect Regula Lüscher and current incumbent Petra Kahlfeldt. Hans Stimmann leaves behind a family, though specific details about his family members and their current residence are not publicly disclosed.
The FAZ praised Stimmann's legacy, stating that he had made an indelible mark on the urban landscape of Berlin and Germany as a whole. His work will continue to be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
