Berlin's Underground Railway (U-Bahn) receives ultra-fast internet connectivity
The Berlin U-Bahn, one of the oldest and largest networks in Europe, has taken a significant leap into the future with the completion of a comprehensive indoor communications project. The new 4G/LTE service now covers the whole of the U-Bahn network, providing high-speed internet connectivity to more than a million passengers each day.
The construction, which took place over a period of 5 years, focused on laying down over 1,000 kilometers of fiberoptic cables and installing 360 tunnel antennas. The work was carried out by BVG construction teams, ensuring minimal disruption to regular train services as it was done primarily at night.
Henrik Falk, CEO of the BVG, made the press release announcing the completion of the project. He stated, "This is a significant step forward for the Berlin U-Bahn. We are now equipped with the most comprehensive indoor communications project in Germany, paving the way for further modernization."
Deutsche Telekom has already made its mark as the first provider to introduce a strong 5G offering at Alexanderplatz in Berlin. It is expected that Alexanderplatz will be the first station to benefit from this powerful 5G offering, marking another milestone in the digital transformation of the Berlin U-Bahn.
The new 4G/LTE service is not specified as being provided by a specific company, but it is laying the foundation for further development. With the U-Bahn network serving nine lines and 175 stations, the potential for growth and improvement is vast.
The Berlin U-Bahn can now boast high-speed internet connectivity, making commuting more convenient and efficient for its passengers. This development is a testament to the city's commitment to digital advancement and its dedication to providing its citizens with modern amenities.
