In the ever-evolving landscape of education, schools have found themselves in the crosshairs of a new threat: cyberattacks. With the shift towards remote learning, these institutions have become increasingly appealing targets for hackers, as reported by various education leaders.

This concern was echoed in CoSN's 2023 survey, where cybersecurity topped the list of priorities for edtech leaders. Recognising the urgency of the situation, authorities have taken significant steps to bolster school IT security.

In Germany, the Bavarian state government, in collaboration with municipal SpitzenverbΓ€nde and the Ministries of Finance and Education, has allocated permanent funding for IT maintenance and system care in schools. This initiative, supported by funds from the Digitalpakt Schule, aims to enhance school IT security. The city of Nuremberg has also taken proactive measures, establishing professional systems and dedicated departments for IT infrastructure maintenance in schools.

Initiatives like the Klasse KI-Community are also promoting cybersecurity awareness and education. This community focuses on ethical and secure use of AI in schools through workshops and training programmes.

Looking ahead, edtech leaders are urged to remain vigilant and secure school networks in the coming year. The importance of this task was highlighted by the cyberattack nightmare experienced by Joel Handler, Director of Technology for Hillsborough Township Public Schools.

Meanwhile, in the United States, there are concerns about the future of higher education. A recent Gallup Poll revealed that only 36% of Americans have a great deal of confidence in higher education. This lack of confidence is reflected in the undergraduate enrollment figures, which dropped 8% from 2019 to 2022.

Amidst these challenges, there is a growing emphasis on career pathways that do not necessarily require college. Sandi Castro, the Career and Technical Education Coordinator for Del Valle ISD in Texas, has observed an increased focus on career readiness.

One potential solution to the cybersecurity issue is the implementation of two-factor authentication. This method, which has doubled since 2020, can help prevent cyberattacks on school networks. As schools navigate the complexities of remote learning and cybersecurity threats, these measures offer a glimmer of hope in ensuring a safer and more secure educational environment for all.
