In the year 2007, Apple made a groundbreaking debut with the introduction of the iPhone, revolutionising the smartphone market. Meanwhile, in the software world, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, had a different view. He believed that there was room for exactly one non-Apple operating system to thrive.

Fast forward to 2002, Rich Miner, co-founder of Android, was working on a project that would challenge Microsoft's dominance. He had created Android Inc. with a mission to prevent Microsoft from controlling the phone market as they had with PCs. Miner's Android would eventually launch the first Windows Mobile smartphone variant in cooperation with Microsoft.

However, Microsoft's foray into the mobile market didn't pan out as expected. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer famously predicted in 2007 that the iPhone would not gain significant market share. The iPhone's success, coupled with the robust progress and innovation in the mobile OS market, highlighted the need for more strong competition, not less.

In 2005, Google acquired Android, and the first commercial Android phone launched in 2008, after Microsoft's attempt with Windows Mobile. This marked a significant shift in the mobile OS landscape, as Android emerged as the standard non-Apple phone platform.

Today, Android is the only major alternative to iOS, as stated by many tech analysts. Microsoft, despite its early attempts, has yet to regain its footing in the mobile market. Rich Miner, now a veteran in the tech industry, continues to worry that Microsoft might end up controlling mobile like they did the PC.

Meanwhile, Apple seems to be dominating the competition in both laptops and phones. The Apple MacBook Air M2 2022 is available for $999, with a sale price of $888.47, and the Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 (2023) is available for $1,799, with a sale price of $1,664.95.

As we look back at the history of mobile operating systems, it's clear that the landscape has been shaped by the decisions and innovations of companies like Apple, Android, and Microsoft. The future of the mobile OS market remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure - the competition will continue to drive progress and innovation.
